The 2018 Schwarzkopf-Stiftung awardee for the Europe Award is Margrethe Vestager, the European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager. The past Young Europeans of the Year and I had the honour of selecting her for this award.
A dedicated politician with an infectious passion for her work.
As Commissioner for Competition, she is well known for fining Google for manipulating search results in favour of its own services. She also orderen Apple to pay billions in back taxes. Margrethe Vestager has set her mark as a Commissioner who strictly sees to the regulation of commercial activity across the European Union and the enforcement of EU rules made to keep the markets fair.
During her acceptance speech, Margrethe Vestager made several striking statements about youth involvement in policy making and regarding women in politics. She firmly believes that it is important to include people from all generations in decision-making bodies. She also finds that it’s not true that young people don’t engage with democracy, the fact is that democracy doesn’t engage with young people itself. She added that she is actively working to alter the male dominated territory that is politics at this very moment.
Margrethe Vestager is a very impressive politician with a heart for young people. She is a very worthy awardee of the Europe Award.
